Assistant Trucking Manager - Direct Hire

Location: Canton Industrial Area - Baltimore, MD (near the ship terminals)

Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire

Schedule: Monday-Friday; variable morning start times (as early as 5 AM) + frequent overtime

Pay: $30-$35/hour + OT

Work Environment: Nicotine-free workplace-non-smokers only


Company Overview

We are recruiting for an Assistant Trucking Manager to support a long-standing and respected marine terminal operator in Baltimore specializing in stevedoring, warehousing, and multi-modal transportation of bulk and project cargo. Due to organizational growth and internal promotions, the company is seeking a long-term addition to the team to backfill the Assistant Trucking Manager role.

This is a key leadership position supporting trucking operations within a busy port environment. The ideal candidate is experienced, steady, collaborative, and interested in growing their career.


Position Overview

The Assistant Trucking Manager supports daily trucking and container operations while supervising drivers, ensuring compliance, coordinating dispatch, and maintaining accurate billing and operational documentation. This role manages drivers plus office support staff, and serves as the operational backup to the Trucking Manager.

Candidates must be flexible with start and end times, including occasional very early shifts (5 AM) and frequent overtime.


Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Driver Management

  • Support daily trucking operations, including dispatch, route planning, and scheduling.
  • Supervise drivers; handle performance management, coaching, and hiring.
  • Assist with managing a team of approx. 25 drivers plus office support staff (billing, chassis, delivery orders, emails).
  • Conduct regular interior and exterior truck and tractor inspections.
  • Monitor hours of service, safety compliance, and driver qualification files.
  • Collaborate with terminal operations, port authorities, and customers to ensure smooth cargo flow.

Container & Dispatch Coordination

  • Coordinate dispatch for container pickups/deliveries across NY, NJ, VA, PA, and MD.
  • Track containers and chassis, schedule terminal appointments, and monitor vessel schedules.
  • Prepare daily container/chassis reports and ensure timely returns.
  • Container experience is strongly preferred and highly beneficial.

Billing & Administrative Oversight

  • Oversee accurate invoicing for all trucking and container-related services.
  • Process DOs, demurrage, chassis usage, per diems, street turns, owner-operator invoices, and billing follow-ups.
  • Maintain spreadsheets and tracking tools for imports, fuel usage, container status, and more.
  • Respond to customer, broker, and driver inquiries via email, phone, and portal systems.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure DOT compliance including DQ (Driver Qualification) files and ELD (Electronic Logging Device) management.
  • Maintain driver medical certifications and regulatory documents.
  • Manage accident reporting and insurance communications.
  • Keep trucking permits current for MD, VA, NJ, PA, and WV.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 5+ years of trucking, logistics, fleet, or transportation operations experience.
  • Management experience required-supervising truck drivers, conducting reviews, hiring, etc.
  • Strong understanding of DOT and trucking compliance.
  • Experience with container trucking is more important than company size.
  • Not suitable for candidates who were recently (within ~1 year) full-time drivers unless followed by substantial office/management experience.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with dispatch systems, transportation software, and Microsoft Excel/Office.
  • Must be a non-smoker.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk yard areas and climb into trucks for inspections several times per week.
  • Prolonged desk and computer work.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs as needed.
